Spurred by de-regulation in the telecommunications industry, Excel introduced an open-based switching platform that enabled rapid deployment of new features. After graduating from the University of Connecticut with a BSEE of Biomedical Engineering, Robert Madonna explored engineering and sciences until 1988, when he founded Excel Switching Corporation.
